Once, a king and his queen had a beautiful, sweet and cheerful daughter whom everybody loved. “There’s nobody in the world like our beautiful princess,” they used to say with pride. The princess loved riding. One day, while riding on her horse, she had a fall and was badly hurt.

She was carried back to the palace. The best doctors in the land were called, but nobody could heal her wounds She could not survive, and in a few days, she was dead. The king and the queen and all the people in the kingdom felt very sad. But the saddest of all was a bird, a little mynah. The mynah was a dear friend of the princess. The mynah used to sing sweet songs for the princess and the princess gave her tasty fruits to eat.

They both enjoyed each other’s com pany for hours. A month later, a memorial ceremony was organised in the honour of the princess. People from all over came to the palace to share the sorrow of the king and the queen. They came to pray for their dear princess who was no m re. The little mynah was still very sad at the death of her dear friend. She sang a sad but beautiful song. The queen liked the song very much.

She called the mynah, stroked her lovingly, took off her own golden earrings and put them on the mynah. The mynah kept those earrings with her. And that its why, to this day, mynah birds wear i golden earrings as a mark of friendship between the bird and the princess.
